Abstract

Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming enterprise management, evolving from a decision-support tool into an autonomous actor capable of independently executing complex managerial and operational tasks. This paper advances the thesis that the development, deployment, and strategic orchestration of autonomous AI systems constitute a fundamental condition for achieving sustainable competitive advantage in modern enterprises. Unlike traditional IT systems, autonomous AI systems demonstrate capabilities for continuous learning, adaptation, and independent execution within defined operational boundaries. Viewed through the lens of the resource-based and dynamic capabilities theories, these systems enable enterprises to significantly enhance operational efficiency, reduce decision latency, and dynamically respond to environmental shifts. Consequently, autonomous AI systems transition from merely supporting managers to becoming strategic assets deeply embedded within core business processes. To bridge conceptual considerations with practical applicability, the paper incorporates an exploratory analysis of the open-source AI ecosystem, utilizing data from the Hugging Face platform. By examining the proliferation and accessibility of pre-trained models, the study demonstrates how the barriers to building enterprise-specific autonomous systems have been radically lowered. This democratization allows organizations to shift their strategic focus from building models from scratch to the orchestration and fine-tuning of open-source agents using proprietary data. Ultimately, the paper argues that enterprises capable of continuously integrating external open-source AI innovations with internal, unique organizational data will establish durable, hard-to-imitate competitive advantages. The transition toward autonomous AI represents a fundamental shift in organizational governance and a key determinant of long-term strategic resilience.
