Abstract

The main goal of this paper is to investigate the technical efficiency of 520 farms in the region of Serbia
North in 2017. The efficiency analysis was performed on the basis of several criteria. In order to determine technical
efficiency, input-oriented Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) with variable return to scale (VRS) was used. The
results showed that farms used production strategies focused on: poultry, horticulture in protected area, open-air
horticulture, fruit production and pig-breeding, achieved higher level of technical efficiency than others. In addition, a
higher level of technical efficiency was achieved by farms located in the region of Vojvodina. Also, a higher level of
technical efficiency was recorded on labour-intensive farms in comparison with labour-extensive. Farms specialized,
due to limited arable land, in horticulture, fruit production and poultry showed the best efficiency performances.
